 Age Agenda Conference 2007

We were pleased to welcome over 200 delegates from across all sectors at this years Age Agenda Conference held in London on 20th February. This prestigious conference brought together an impressive line up of expert speakers to share the latest policy information on ageing and older people in the UK today. 

The programme included a series of keynote speeches, a panel debate and a range of  discussion seminars.  The opening plenary session featured:

  • Baroness Cathy Ashton, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Constitutional Affairs
  • Paul Coen from the Local Government Association
  • Professor Ian Philp from the Department of Health 
  • Ivan Lewis MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Care Services

The final session of the day featured the panel debate: 'Is a new settlement on funding long term care now possible?' chaired by Malcolm Dean, former Guardian journalist.  The expert panel featured Sir Derek Wanless (The Kings Fund), Dame Jane Campbell (DRC and CEHR Commissioner), Richard Walsh (ABI) and Gordon Lishman (Age Concern England). 

In addition delegates had the opportunity to tailor the conference to explore in detail the specific policy areas of their choice through discussion seminars led by policy and practice professionals.  Discussion and debate was led be representatives from the following organisations:

  • Department for Work and Pensions
  • Department of Health
  • Cloisters Chambers
  • Elborough Consulting
  • Gateshead Council
  • Healthcare Commission
  • Help the Aged
  • King’s College London
  • Local Government Association
  • UK Inquiry into Mental Health and Well-Being in Later Life
  • Which? 

Age Concern was represented by speakers from Age Concern Blackburn and Darwen, Age Concern Derby and Derbyshire, Age Concern England, Age Concern Senior Health Shop Age Concern West Sussex, Age Concern Wirral.

Feedback received from delegates following the conference has highlighted the value of the discussion seminars as they provided a welcome opportunity to discuss key ageing related issues and continue debates arising in the plenary sessions.  Many delegates emphasized the important role the conference plays to their areas of work, in giving a comprehensive overview of the current policy agenda affecting older people, they also highlighted that the speeches were thought provoking and valuable.
