| I was aged 10 at the outbreak of WW2. I thought it would be an exciting adventure - in real life - much superior to fictional adventures.
We lived on the outskirts of Bristol so had very few bombs which didn't cause much damage. However we could see and hear a great deal - the drone of bombers, explosions, search-lights, anti-aircraft guns etc. All very exciting!
One morning after a night of bombing when we had seen the red glow over the city, my father drove into town to see what had happened. He returned and we all sat down to lunch. We asked him what he had seen. He had no words. He just cried. That changed my life. For the first time I knew that war was evil.
