The Time Capsule - Working Life

A Bus Trip to Remember 1940

Working at a Dagenham chemical factory, I had to travel by bus from northwest London. There was an air raid on one journey, and I looked out of the back of the bus to see the road cratered. The driver stopped to allow passengers to shelter. I noticed a plume of smoke from the roof of a house and called to inform the lady cooking her lunch. With no pail to hand I tipped her boiling greens into the sink, filled the saucepan with water, and went upstairs. An incendiary bomb was burning in a trunk. Perhaps it was unwise to have tipped the water into the hole, but the fire soon went out. I left the house hurriedly as the bus driver was urging passengers to board, and we resumed out journey.
