The Time Capsule - Working Life

Staff Nurse 1979

I qualified as a staff nurse in October 1979. Here I am feeling very proud in my new uniform in the grounds of Sharoe Green Hospital, Preston. Notice the starched hat, grey dress, belt and buckle. My parents bought me the silver buckle when I qualified. Today I wear trousers and a tunic, no hat, belt or buckle.

I enjoyed my student days in Preston. Most of us lived in the nurse’s home, looked after by the home warden who locked the doors at 10 o'clock, but we were a resourceful group of nurses and could always find a way in.
