The Time Capsule - 1940s

V.E. Day Party 1945

Location - Morecambe Lancashire

End of the war (in Europe) caused great relief and excitement. The residents of Poulton Square celebrated by hiring a coach for an afternoon trip to a deer park in Milnthorpe. On their return a party was held in the square. This was mainly for women and children although there were some soldiers and sailors there. The food was provided by local families from rations. Jelly was served. Some of the children wouln't eat it as it was the first time they had seen it. The long tables and forms for seating were borrowed from the nearby primary school where they were used for school dinners. in the evening somebody fixed up a radiogram and records were played for games and dancing. There was also a man with an accordion playing songs for everyone to sing. There was some sadness because in this small community there was the loss of fathers, brothers and sons. However, this was a day of rejoicing. A day to remember.

A large crowd of people having a party, V.E.Day Party, Morecambe, Lancashire.
