The Time Capsule - 1930s

Death of George V

I remember the day of the death of George V very clearly. I was in bed and my mother had just gone downstairs to get the paper. Suddenly I heard her crying. Wondering what it was all about as I was only 8 years old I was most concerned. The paper had a thick black line around it's edges.

The whole of the town suddenly became quiet. No one blew their horns on the car. Everyone was walking about as if in a daze. The cinemas all shut for the rest of the week until the funeral. On the day of the funeral all the buses stopped, and everyone stayed indoors listening to the wireless.   I remember the day of the death of George V very clearly.
