| This is a photo of Aunt Mary showing her samplar in her school needlework class. She was born in East Lancashire in 1895 and started school in 1899. Mary left school aged 12 and helped at home before going to work in a cotton mill where she worked for the rest of her life. Needlework was a lifelong interest and she attended evening classes at the local Institute where she was awarded certificates and book prizes.
Her young man did not return from the Great War. She did not marry and stayed in the family home. "Not enough men left to go round after that" she said.
