Grandfather, who was born on a farm near Pocklington, East Yorkshire.

As he had eight brothers there was no work for most of them on the farm when they grew up. Grandfather left home and walked all the way to Leeds to look for work. He succeeded in getting a job on the railways at Marsh Lane Goods Yard and also married and raised a family. He became a steward at his local church and also a special constable during the First World War.
