The Time Capsule - Stories

Silvertown explosion 1917

It was a dull evening and I was lying, reading a book, in front of the fire in our sitting room. My aunt was sitting in an armchair beside me. She was knitting when, with this immense crash, the windows shattered. I was frightened out of my wits but my aunt calmly said 'It's alright Clifford - it will be our turn next' and went on knitting. Her calm reassured me so I just went on reading.

Many years later I was involved in Bombay in a similar mass explosion when the munitions ship blew up in Number One dock. Our building was in a direct line and my widows faced the dock - strangely enough, and fortunately for me, for some strange reason our building was spared.
