Why support us?
By making a donation, you are helping us to provide vital services to the older people across the country who desperately need our help. Through such services as our befriending schemes, day centres, lunch clubs and our national freephone helpline – the Age Concern Information Line – we are the largest provider of services to older people after the NHS.
However, we currently are unable to help all the older people who need our support, which is why donations from individuals are so important.
Shirley's story
Shirley married her late husband, Cliff, back in the 1950’s. They moved into a comfortable little house and dreamed of a lovely future together. They were happy until, Cliff unexpectedly passed away. Without any family and her friends long gone, she coped as best she could but soon became isolated and desperately lonely.
Everyday was the same for Shirley but the winter months were harder. She still had overdue bills to pay, a cold house that she couldn’t afford to heat properly and no-one to talk to.
Fortunately, Shirley was spotted in a local library by someone that worked there. She told her about an information and advice session that was being held by Age Concern the very next day and recommended that Shirley should attend. A little reluctant at first, Shirley promised to come back.
Little did she realise that this decision would change her life.
At the advice session, Shirley was greeted by a friendly smile and a cup of tea. An Age Concern volunteer began to chat to Shirley about benefits, whether she had a bus-pass and about her bills. After Shirley’s initial apprehension she began to tell her about her life.
Your donation can help us transform lives
Shirley now attends an Age Concern day centre where she is made to feel welcome by her new-found friends. With activities such as ballroom dancing, reminiscence sessions and computer training, the world doesn’t seem such a lonely place any more.
Shirley’s story is typical of the thousands we regularly encounter at Age Concern and, fortunately, we were able to reach out and help in this instance. A regular donation from your salary to Age Concern could help us support more vulnerable people in need of our services, like Shirley. Together, we can transform the lives of older people.
