Our policy position

Transport for older people

Access to suitable transport is crucial to enable older people to:

  • keep in touch with friends and family
  • obtain goods and services
  • continue to live independently.

Adequate, affordable, accessible and appropriate transport should be available to ensure older people are not socially isolated and can participate fully in society.

Older drivers

Older people who can afford a car find driving an essential way of maintaining their independence. To take account of older people’s needs we are calling for improvements to be made to:

  • the design of vehicles
  • road layout
  • traffic signs.

We strongly oppose the discrimination suffered by older people in relation to car hire, car insurance and travel insurance premiums. We would also oppose any proposal to make drivers over a certain age retake a driving test or a medical.
