Spotlight on... Age Concern Buckinhamshire

woman being trained by teenagers

Age Concern Buckinghamshire has received an AOL Innovation in the Community Award for proposing innovative ways of using the internet.

The charity will use the £2,000 award and year’s free broadband to help older local people:

  • expand their interests
  • improve their quality of life through
  • receive IT classes in day centres, clubs and sheltered accommodation
  • meet teenage pupils helping to train them

Josephine Brader, Director of Age Concern Buckinghamshire, said:

'Imagine you are over 70 years old, knowing the whole IT thing has passed you by. Everyone under 50 is emailing, shopping online, and even writing their life history.

Many older people find it difficult to get out on their own – a computer can bring the world into their homes and this award will help us to do that.'

Commenting on this year’s winning organisations, John Fisher, Chief Executive of Citizens Online, said:

'With the digital age truly upon us, voluntary organisations should be encouraged to make the most of online media. We know from previous years what a difference these awards can make.'
