What we are doing

In 2007 we launched a new programme of activity on social inclusion.  This is focusing our work – our campaigning‚ our products‚ and our services – more towards:

  • the most disadvantaged older people
  • preventing and overcoming social exclusion.

This year’s Age Concern Week also seeks to highlight our work in preventing social exclusion amongst older people.

Our work

Working with disadvantaged older people is our ‘core business’.  But our new programme is ensuring that we reach out to older people in all their diversity‚ especially the most excluded.

We will be working to:

  • expand our provision of effective preventative services
  • improve referral and signposting relationships
  • ensure services are attractive to older people in all their diversity

The following reports can be downloaded from the top right hand side of this page:

Out of sight‚ out of mind - social exclusion behind closed doors
Being socially excluded and living alone in old age - findings from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA).
A report prepared by Dr Panayotes Demakakos‚ University College London‚ for Age Concern England.

First year of programme

In the first year of the programme we are particularly reviewing our work with excluded older people who fall within four groups:

  • people living in unfit housing
  • very old people living alone
  • people with limited mental capacity
  • people who have recently been bereaved
