Retirement migration

Over one million older people from the UK receive their pension abroad‚ which is equal to 1 in 12 pensioners.  This figure rises significantly with the addition of those who are spending part of the year living abroad and those who have not registered their move.  The real figure could be nearer double this number.

Older people residing abroad are not a homogenous group; they are as different and as varied as the older population within the UK.  They are affected by a wide range of policies in the UK and overseas‚ but little account is taken of their specific circumstances and needs.  As a result they often fall in the gap between two countries' arrangements for social protection and public services.
