Age Concern's response to rising employment levels for older workers (15.08.08)

Gordon Lishman‚ Director General of Age Concern‚ said:

“Many older people want to be able to continue to work because they get satisfaction from it‚ while others feel they need to work to supplement their income – so it is good news for pensioners that higher numbers are in employment. However‚ we know many other older people want to continue working but are denied the opportunity because of Mandatory Retirement Ages or simply find it difficult to find work because of their age. People’s ability to work should be based on our skills and motivation‚ not our birth certificate. The Government must abolish unfair and senseless Mandatory Retirement Ages.”
