Dignity - building block 2

Everyone has the right to be treated with dignity‚ this is especially important when you are receiving care. Dignity means that everyone is treated with respect and receives the care that meets their needs enabling them to live their life how they want.

For many older people they are not treated with dignity. We hear of older people who have no choice in the care they receive or they have to take what is offered‚ despite the fact it may not be right for their needs. Many older people do not receive the amount of care that they have been assessed as needed as carers often come in late and leave early.

This leaves many older people feeling upset over the way they are treated and upset over the poor standard of care that they receive.

Older people have told us that being treated with dignity means:

  • Wanting to be treated as a person‚ not as a set of care needs
  • Wanting to get the care I want‚ not the care you think I need
  • Wanting to get a minimum quality of care regardless of who pays for it

For many older people and their families‚ the care system is very confusing and daunting.
