Clarity - building block 3

For many older people and their families‚ the care system is very confusing and daunting. It is not clear where to go for information and even when information is available is does not explain in a clear and concise way the different care options available or how it is all financed.

We know that information is essential for older people and families to enable them to make an informed choice about the care that is needed. For people who arrange their own care the situation is even more difficult as they do not receive any help or support from social services so have to find out about care on their own.

This leaves older people and their families feeling confused and worried that they are not going to make an informed choice over the care package they choose.

Older people have told us that clarity means:

  • When I need care‚ I want to get clear and simple advice‚ and support to choose the options that are right for me
  • As my care needs change‚ I want to continue to get clear and simple advice‚ and support to choose the options that are right for me
  • I want to be clear about the future: what will the State provide? What do I need to do to plan ahead?
  • fairness building blockFairness

Fairness is an essential building block. Every person who uses the care system‚ no matter what their needs‚ should be treated fairly and equally.
