Music review: The Puppini Sisters

Suddenly it seems they are everywhere: On posters‚ tv‚ and starring at many of this summer’s music events.

Causing all the commotion is a trio of women in immaculate 1940s get-ups trilling out pure Andrews Sisters style harmonies so tight you couldn’t get a bobby pin between them.

I saw the Puppini Sisters at last summer's Secret Garden Festival. Everyone in the crowd was jitterbugging and swing dancing - or at least attempting to do so! This was not the generation that has traditionally grown up to 1940s style music‚ but everyone was thoroughly enjoying it nonetheless.

The Puppini Sisters have done well to bridge the generation gap. They play everything from The Puppini Sisterstraditional 1940s songs to clever 1940s style versions of modern day classics. So there is something for everyone‚ whatever your age!

“Out on the wily‚ windy moors we roll and fall in green…” they crooned‚ a bit of arms-waving-over-the-head choreography that seems vaguely familiar coming in. What? Kate Bush? ‘Wuthering Heights’?!

Then it’s a gentle‚ swaying version of the Smiths’ ‘Panic on the streets of London‚ doo-be-doo…’ moving effortlessly into a swinging version of ‘Tu Vuo Fa L'Americano’ – the crowd goes crazy.

Further surprises are disco songs like ‘I Will Survive’ as well as contemporary-sounding renditions of more 'appropriate' numbers like ‘In the Mood’ and ‘Mr Sandman’.
