Latest developments

We played an active role in campaigning for legislation to help people without capacity‚ and in getting an amendment made to the Mental Capacity Act to ensure that the needs of all older people were recognised.

The Act stipulates that every adult is assumed to have capacity to make their own decisions unless it is proved otherwise. It introduces a lasting power of attorney whereby people can appoint someone to make decisions on their behalf‚ and has established Independent Mental Capacity Advocates (IMCAs) for support in specific circumstances‚ and a new Court of Protection.

We are working actively to ensure that the principles of the Act are taken seriously in practice‚ and we will be taking part in the forthcoming government review of the implementation of the Act.
