What is an Intergenerational approach?

Intergenerational activity encompasses a wide range of exciting initiatives used to engage‚ enable and create understanding and new experiences between generations.

These generations are often polarised from each other by age‚ while often feeling and encountering very similar perceptions of loneliness‚ fear and powerlessness.

We support a Network of older persons' organisations delivering Intergenerational work while sharing best practice and providing materials for all organisations who are interested in working across generations in this way.

An Intergenerational approach can be used for both long term community development projects and short one off events. Developing the competence‚ confidence and status of younger and older people can make a significant contribution to developing the capacity and cohesion of communities.

The aim

To promote learning and sharing of experiences between the generations.

This can benefit older people and children who are living in:

  • difficult family situations
  • poverty
  • troubled communities
  • loneliness and isolation

The benefits

Many of our volunteers have found the experience extremely rewarding - read their comments about the scheme.

Professionals value the programme because these experiences give children confidence and improves their learning.
