Harrow Elders Group Middlesex were awarded £1‚250 in March 2006 for a Luncheon Club and the costs for a cook to prepare food*. The project has been a great success with membership rising to 65 people.
All members are vegetarians and have benefited from good food and company at the twice a week club. The social inclusion part of the project is key‚ as it brings people together enabling them to retain independence‚ social contact and friends.
Main contact for the project Mr Doshi said‚ "The grant has made a big difference. Most of these people‚ in their 80's and 90's need to eat a hot meal especially in the winter. Most of these elders do not have any other social life and we provide them with a centre where they can come and socialise‚ read newspapers‚ and most importantly play card games which stimulate their brains. These include bridge and bukhara. This activity is so much enjoyed by all that attend on Mondays and Wednesdays."
The group have now got 65 members‚ and an additional 20 people are on a waiting list to join.
The club has continued to be supported by the Local Authority in Harrow and is now looking to the future. They have now also started another group in Neasden. The group started on 5th January 2007‚ and after just four weeks they have almost 100 members taking part.
