The current situation

The Winter Fuel Payment has been £200 per household since the year 2000.

From 2003 onwards, an additional £100 has been paid to households with someone aged 80 or over.

Increasing fuel prices are causing great concern among many older people. Household bills take up a high proportion of their expenditure.

Unfortunately, far too many older people turn down their heating rather than risk not being able to meet their bills. This leaves them vulnerable to hyperthermia and other illnesses and reduces their quality of life.

Although the Winter Fuel Payment is popular among older people, it has not risen to keep pace with increasing bills.
