Dental care - Factsheet 5

SmileFor a number of years, adults in certain parts of the country have had difficulty finding a local dentist registering new NHS adult patients.

In response, the Government introduced a number of initiatives to improve access to NHS treatment, including opening 50 dental access centres across the country.

This factsheet mainly looks at NHS treatment, but includes a section on private dental care.

For those seeking NHS treatment, it includes information on:

  • Finding a dentist
  • Intervals between check-ups
  • Urgent and out-of-hours care
  • Accessing treatment if your health makes it difficult to visit a dentist
  • Charging for treatment
  • Help with the cost of treatment if you are on a low income
  • Resolving problems and making a complaint
  • Taking care of your teeth and gums

The section on private treatment includes details of the General Dental Council’s complaints scheme.
