Our campaign is calling for:
- All foot care‚ from basic nail cutting to chiropody‚ must be free at the point of use for older people who need it.
- The disparity in access to services – the post code lottery – experienced by older people around the country must be ended.
- Staff in care homes‚ hospitals and those providing care in people’s own homes should be able to provide basic foot care such as nail cutting and understand when to refer clients on for specialist treatment.
- The Department of Health should ensure that chiropody is brought within the NHS maximum waiting time target of 18 weeks from the point of referral to assessment and first treatment.
We are calling on the following organisations to take urgent action to address the problems with foot care services:
- Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) who are responsible for making arrangements to ensure the health needs of local people are met
- Local Authorities who are responsible for ensuring that care staff providing domiciliary care services are trained to provide basic foot care
- The Department of Health‚ which provides policy and guidance for PCTs
- Health and social care regulators who are responsible for upholding standards
- Strategic Health Authorities who can influence PCTs
- Local Overview and Scrutiny Committees who have the role of monitoring local services
- Parliamentarians who are accountable to local people and can lobby on their behalf
