Sheila's examiner experiences

Examiner SheilaSheila retired last year from her post as head of religious studies at Durham High School for Girls‚ where she had taught for almost 20 years.

As a newly-retired teacher‚ examining gives me intellectual stimulation through contact with other professionals‚ keeping up to date with the latest reading and keeping abreast of all the changes in the world of education.

The paper I’m a team leader for is particularly concerned with ethical issues and examining will keep me in touch with the new developments in medical science and the varied philosophical and religious approaches that provide a basis for moral decision making.

I feel I’ve got a lot of experience behind me and can offer a useful service.

Examining undoubtedly opened up new opportunities for me – for example‚ I’ve written four GCSE text books over the past 18 months.

I’m also involved in a lot of teacher support. When new specs come out they need to be clearly explained to teachers – now that I’m retired I have more time to get out and do that.

The money is extremely useful. But it’s the sheer reward of doing it that matters most.

Possibly‚ if I weren’t examining it would be all too easy to sit back and let the world go by.”
