Dragging Feet

This thought-provoking poem by Chris Markham emphasises smiling in spite of what old age throws at you.

Dragging Feet

Oh! dragging feet‚ likened on to lead‚
Fashioned so by life's fiery furnace‚
Supported once‚ limbs of agile youth‚
That sought strange ground to tread

Caring only to absorb the new‚
And knees‚ elastic in their doing‚
Pinioned now by chains unseen‚
Function not easily‚ despite all urging‚

As joints in sockets grind bone on bone‚
Belying one's countenance to inner pain‚
Where formally nothing was felt‚ 'cept
Normalicy in such action‚

All failing now‚ as life demands it's fee
With inner organs party to the sham‚
As Innocence lives‚ carefree to smile‚
Ignorant of what's to come.
