The Fear Factor

Older people and fear of street crime - a survey of views‚ experiences and impact on quality of life.

Here are some of the findings of the research report:

  • Whilst a majority of older people enjoy living in their neighbourhoods and know and trust their neighbours‚ many are also concerned about the level of safety and security of the area they live in.
  • A significant number of older people feel that street crime is a big problem where they live
  • Neighbourhood Watch and Crimestoppers are two crime prevention agencies known to the majority of older people
  • Consultation with older people about crime prevention initiatives has been low‚ whereas there is a high level of interest in crime amongst this group‚ with a willingness to get involved and to receive information
  • Older people are likely to report incidents of street crime but less likely to report anti social behaviour to police
