Latest developments

The Government published its new Crime Strategy for 2008-11. This is concerned with reducing violent crime but also highlights the Government’s intention to have a new national approach to designing crime out of new products and services‚ including the built environment. We welcome this approach as there is evidence that bad design contributes to fear of crime among older people which in turn can discourage older people from venturing out‚ especially after dark.

Local Crime and Disorder Audits‚ culminating in local crime reduction strategies‚ are due to take place in 2007/08.  We are keen that local authorities widely consult with older people about their concerns. Distraction burglary continues to be a problem in many areas.
