Council Tax is the system of paying towards local government services in England‚ Scotland and Wales. This factsheet gives an outline of the most important aspects of the system for people aged 60 or over. It does not cover all the rules - for example‚ it does not include information for families with children or students.

The information given in this factsheet is applicable to England only.

Different arrangements apply in Northern Ireland‚ Scotland and Wales. Readers in those countries are advised to contact their national Age Concern organisations for further information.

The information given in this factsheet is correct for the period April 2009 - March 2010. Benefit rates and other figures are expected to increase in April 2010‚ but rules and figures sometimes change during the year.
