Legendary rock group Queen have topped a list of Britain's biggest-selling albums of all time.
Queen's Greatest Hits was crowned as the most popular album choice amongst Britons over the past few decades in the rundown‚ which was compiled by the Official UK Charts Company.
According to the list‚ the album has sold a total of around 5.4 million copies in Britain‚ beating the Beatles' Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band‚ which has sold 4.8 million copies‚ to the top spot.
Music industry officials have spent the past six months trawling through everything from hand-written till receipts dating back to the 1950s‚ to records of current chart sales‚ in order to name Britain's top 100 albums.
But while Queen and the Beatles have rightfully been recognised for their contribution to the nation's musical heritage‚ other seminal performers‚ including the Rolling Stones‚ the Sex Pistols and Bob Dylan have surprisingly failed to make the chart‚ with not a single release on the list of top 100 albums between them.
Seminal guitarist in the band Brian May said he thought that St Pepper would be the top album‚ adding: "I'm really pleased – it did make me sit up and take notice."
