BME elders - an overview of our work

We have been working with minority ethnic elders for many years, providing a wide range of local services designed with and for them as well as working at regional and national level to raise issues about their needs.

The activities and services provided by us for older people are many and varied. We believe services should accommodate the needs of ethnic minority elders as part of the wider community, taking into account racial, cultural, religious and linguistic differences.

We have supported this work in a variety of ways, including:

  • Day-care, drop-in and day centres
  • Information and advice in appropriate languages
  • Social contact
  • Supporting independent living
  • Healthy ageing programmes
  • Listening events
  • Promoting older people as a resource
  • Service grants
  • Publications
  • A national conference

Training: Voice & Choice

Voice & Choice courses are events specifically geared to improving the skills of older people so that they can more effectively express their opinions and contribute to consultations and user involvement opportunities. They are specifically aimed at older people who have little or no experience of being involved in consultation activities.

Age Concern Training runs a variety of courses across the country for managers, care staff, carers and people seeking employment.
