Latest age equality policy developments include:
- The Discrimination Law Review published its Green Paper in June 2007, exploring the options for a Single Equality Act that would harmonise, simplify and possibly extend discrimination law. We will be arguing for parity of protection against age discrimination.
- The Equality and Human Rights Commission launched in October 2007. Although there will be many competing demands on the EHRC’s resources, it will give older people its first statutory champion.
- The age discrimination regulations came into effect in October 2006. We have brought a judicial review against the government, arguing that by allowing mandatory retirement ages the regulations do not comply with European law. The case has been referred to the European Court of Justice.
