- ACAS (Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service) provides guidance on the regulations and on employment rights in general. Call their helpline on 08457 47 47 47
- AdviceNow has a wide range of accessible information, including on age discrimination
- Age Concern Information Line – as well as sending out this mini-Guide, has a wide wide range of information for everyone over 50 – call free on 0800 00 99 66
- Scottish Helpline for Older People – Age Concern Scotland’s helpline – call 0845 125 9732
- The Age and Employment Network is a campaigning organisation, with a network of 250 member organisations, working for better opportunities for older people to continue working and learning. Call 020 7843 1590
- Help the Aged – information for and about older people – visit
- The Employers’ Forum on Age offers a wealth of invaluable information aimed at employers.
- National Institute for Adult and Continuing Education (NIACE) – information about the new legislation as it affects education and training. Call 0116 204 4200
- Age positive is a government campaign promoting age diversity in employment.
For free advice and representation
- The Equality and Human Rights Commission has responsibility for promoting and enforcing age discrimination legislation. The EHRC can take legal action on behalf of individuals. Call 0845 604 6610 (England), 0845 604 8810 (Wales), or 0845 604 5510 (Scotland).
- Your local Age Concern can give you information about the law and will help you find advice in your area– visit www.ageconcern.org.uk , call or look your local phone book for their contact details.
- Visit your local Citizens Advice Bureau
- There may be a Law Centre, or independent advice agency providing free advice in your area.
- Community Legal Advice can give free advice over the phone if you qulaify for legal aid, and can direct you to local advice agencies and solicitors – phone 0845 345 4 345
- If you’re a member of a Trade Union, you’ll be able to contact your representative for advice.
- Some solicitors offer a free initial meeting to discuss whether you have a potential claim.
- If you have Legal Expense Insurance, perhaps as part of a household insurance policy, you should check this to see if it will cover a solicitor’s costs for a tribunal claim.
