Our response to Ofgem's social tariff guidelines (25.07.08)

“It is good news that Ofgem is issuing these guidelines. It is common sense that social tariffs aimed at the poorest customers should offer the cheapest deal. The current situation unfairly penalises older people who are less likely to have access to cheap internet deals‚ and those on pre-payment meters.

“However in order to make social tariffs work‚ it must be made mandatory‚ not voluntary‚ for energy companies to offer them at the best rates. These tariffs also need to be accurately targeted at those who need them. Allowing energy companies access to personal data to target help to those in fuel poverty may be justified by the pressure energy price hikes are causing. However the data must be handled by a trusted third party and customers are fully informed and given the option to opt out.”
