Barbara J Curtis from Mannamead‚ Plymouth
Nominated by granddaughter Nicola May
Nicola‚ 27‚ nominated Barbara because she thinks her grandmother is a truly remarkable and extraordinary woman‚ a free spirit with a lust for life and a passion for travel. The grandmother of ten and great-grandmother of five fostered children for 25 years‚ offering the same support and compassion to all in her care.
Barbara’s passion for travelling began after she suffered a health scare 20 years ago. She gave up smoking and decided to put the money she would have spent on cigarettes away to save for a holiday. Her first tip overseas was backpacking in Greece‚ she has since enjoyed visits to many countries and is planning a backpacking trip to China this year. Whilst on her travels she still thinks of others‚ on return from a break in India she raised money for a well to be built at a children’s orphanage she had visited.
Nicola says: “Everyone turns to my Nan when in need of help‚ advice‚ words of wisdom or just a cuddle. She is a pillar of support‚ the rock and centre of our family. She has given so much to our family and it would be fantastic for this to be recognised.”
Barbara says: “I was shocked to find out I was up for the Award – I had no idea I’d been nominated. I have always felt it important to spend quality time with my grandchildren and for them to forge close relationships with each other."
