An Age Concern England spokesperson said:
“As people are living longer‚ and populations become increasingly diverse‚ the need to develop suitable housing for older people has never been greater.
“In the next 10 years‚ the population of over 65s will increase by 15%. This means a growing number of people will need affordable housing that can be easily adapted to meet their needs.
“While the Government promotes home ownership‚ 1.8m pensioners in the UK lives in poverty‚ and some older home owners struggle to meet basic repair and maintenance costs to homes.
“Ensuring maximum choice for homes that meet the needs and aspirations of today's‚ and future older generations‚ must become a priority for the Government. A recognition that the needs of older people must lie at the heart of future housing planning‚ is also urgently needed to meet the housing challenge we face.”
