Alan Read from Hoveton‚ Norfolk
Nominated by grandson Toby Lee
Toby‚ 9‚ nominated his granddad because they enjoy a very close bond. Alan encourages his grandson to take part in lots of activities‚ giving his grandson the chance to do things he didn’t have the opportunity to do when he was young.
Toby says: “Granddad encourages me to think I can achieve anything‚ but he also helps me to get better if something I try goes wrong. He is my best friend and he is always there for me and we spend a lot of time doing lots of things together. He is the best.”
Since he retired Alan has immersed himself in Toby’s world. His grandson is keen on boxing‚ dry-slope skiing and is a talented ballroom dancer. Alan goes with him all around the country to watch him compete in dancing competitions. Toby has been dancing since he was 6 years old and says: “Granddad is my mascot‚ he brings me luck.” Alan also supports Toby with learning the keyboard and violin and in return‚ Toby has taught Alan how to use a computer.
Alan says: “It is wonderful to have been nominated. They kept it a big secret so it was a great surprise. Toby is my only grandchild and after having daughters myself‚ I am enjoying having a grandson to indulge and encourage in my passion for sport. Having him around keeps me fit and on my toes since I retired.”
