Age Concern Eastern Region (ACEast) operates across the East of England Region‚ which includes the counties of Norfolk‚ Suffolk‚ Cambridgeshire‚ Essex‚ Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.
It is a Steering Group member of Future East‚ the Regional Forum on Ageing‚ a regional strategic partnership which exists to promote awareness of demographic ageing and its implications. To foster the development of policy‚ goods and services by all sectors which is responsive to the needs of an aging population‚ including current generations of older people.
The East of England has a population of 5.6 million‚ and is predominantly rural. While on average prosperous‚ there are significant pockets of deprivation particularly in Great Yarmouth‚ the Fens‚ the Norfolk coast‚ and in Thames Gateway. There is a large Traveller population‚ and over 25% pensioner households live on below median incomes. There are skills shortages in some areas‚ but a high proportion of older and disabled workers not in employment. The proportion of the population aged 65+ exceeds the national average‚ and by 2020 over half the population will be aged over 50.
