Our response to Peter Hain's interview on the pensions crisis (04.04.05)

Gordon Lishman‚ Director General of Age Concern England said:

“If Labour won a third term in office‚ their reforms to resolve the pensions crisis would need to be more than ‘fizzy’; they would have to be dynamite.

“Fundamental reform rather than incremental change is now the only way to achieve a fair pension system that will meet the real needs of an ageing population.

“The basic principles of this reform must be to tackle pensioner poverty‚ give everyone the chance to build a decent retirement income and offer a fair deal to women and carers. To protect the poorest and give working people a fair deal‚ the new Government should either introduce a universal pension or an increased basic state pension of at least £105 per week."
