Our response to reports of DIY dentistry (22.05.08)

Age Concern’s Director General, Gordon Lishman, said:

“It is disgraceful that any patient can be left feeling they have to resort to treating themselves because of the dearth of NHS dentists. Lack of dentists and expensive treatment costs are hitting older people on low fixed incomes hardest and threatening their health, because they simply can’t find dental care they can afford.

“The Government continues to claim that the NHS is free at the point of use – but this is clearly not the case for dental care.  As part of its commitment to focus on disease prevention, the Government must revise the system to ensure that NHS dentistry is available to those that need it.”
