Grandparent of the Year 2006 winner: George Birkett

George Birkett with his grandchildren Samantha and Thomas McNultyGeorge Birkett from Carnforth‚ Lancashire
Nominated by his grandchildren Samantha and Thomas McNulty.

Thomas and Samantha‚ both 13‚ nominated their granddad because he has supported them and their mum Susan since they were born. George has helped them to understand the death of their triplet sister at just two hours old‚ and to come to terms with their own health problems related to cerebral palsy.

As Thomas gets older it is difficult for his mum to lift him so George sleeps over every night to help Thomas in and out of bed and turn during the night.  Samantha says‚ “Our granddad supports us 100 per cent. He is always there for us and helping our family. He gives us lots of love and attention and advice. Granddad explains things to me and makes things better without telling me what to do. He is the best Granddad in the whole wide world.”

George is actively involved with his local community‚ he has twice been the Mayor of Carnforth and is on the board for the town’s twinning association.  He is also Chairman of the charity ‘A Breath for Life’ helping children with different disabilities have a better quality of life.

George and his wife Sheila have nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren‚ they are due to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in March.

Before he received his award as Grandparent of the year 2006 George said:

“I already feel like a winner for being nominated by Samantha and Thomas and for having such wonderful grandchildren and a great family.  It is a tremendous honour.”
