Regions for all ages programme activities

First year of activity

During the first year of the programme (2002/3)‚ the sponsors brought together a partnership Programme Advisory Group (PAG) drawing together representatives of regional policy makers alongside leading academics and organisations working with older people. The PAG has worked with the sponsors to shape the programme and ensure that its focus is both significant and relevant to the emerging regionalisation of England.

There were three major activities undertaken during the first year of the programme:

  • The production of a number of key commissioned papers on the issues suggested by demographic ageing for the English regions
  • The organisation of a substantial Regions for All Ages Conference in Birmingham on March 11 2003‚ to promote a wide debate on the issues amongst regional organisations
  • The commissioning of a review of the current evidence base about ageing at regional level in England with the intention of proposing a research agenda for the future. Regions for All Ages : Regional Evidence Review.

In the second and third year of activity‚ the Programme is focusing on:

1.  The development of evidence about the impact of ageing on different aspects of life in the regions. The key themes are:

2.  Supporting initiatives to highlight and co-ordinate activity on ageing in the English regions

3.  Work to enhance co-ordination between networks of regional organisations at national level and with national bodies including Government departments on ageing

The programme has stimulated a number of related initiatives by organisations working to support the programme.

The Regions for All Ages programme complements and informs initiatives being undertaken within the regions by members of Age Concern regions‚ Regional Assemblies and other regional partners to monitor demographic ageing and work out the impacts and required policy responses at regional level.

In addition to the Regions for All Ages programme‚ Age Concern regions are active participants in regional policy development and comment on key regional strategies as they are developed.
