Gordon Lishman, Director General of Age Concern, said:
"Many pensioners will be angered by these figures. Huge rises in Council Tax and other household bills in recent years have left a big dent in pensioner pockets. At the same time Council Tax benefit is still the least claimed benefit by older people, with up to 2.2 million pensioners missing out.
“The state pension is nowhere near enough to cover the rapidly rising cost of living and should be increased to at least £124 per week. The Government should also replace Council Tax with a fairer system that reflects people’s ability to pay, and focus its efforts on getting benefits cash to all those who need it."
