Hot weather advice

Woman wearing a sun hatIf you are over 75 or caring for older people you need to be especially vigilant in case of a heatwave this summer.

People over 75 are particularly at risk at suffering from heat exhaustion or heatsroke‚ which in some cases can be fatal.

A new Heatwave guide has been published on the Department of Health website advising people how to cope in the event of extremely hot weather.

Top tips for keeping cool in very hot weather include:

  • Stay out of the heat‚ especially the mid-day sun
  • Always wear a sun hat when outdoors during the day
  • Keep your curtains closed to keep your home cool
  • Cool down with a wet flannel or a cool shower/bath
  • Keep drinking plenty of water and juice - avoid alcohol and coffee
  • Ask your doctor for advice if you are worried about coping with the heat
  • Contact older relatives/ neighbours daily to make sure they are ok
