Despite its universal inevitability, taboos persist about death and this inhibits discussion of the issue by individuals, communities and policymakers.
These taboos are based on cultural, historical, religious and individual beliefs and may have an influence on the fact that, although most deaths are not entirely unexpected, people often die in circumstances that are less than ideal for them.
We believe older people should have access to high quality palliative care services (including pain management) which support their physical and mental wellbeing, respect their personal choice (including where advance directives are made) and maintain their dignity.
