Comment on first comprehensive study of ageism by Age Concern/ the University of Kent 'How ageist is Britain?' (07.09.05)

Gordon Lishman‚ Director General of Age Concern England said:

"Ageism is rife in Britain and has a pernicious effect on all our lives. This study found that from the age of 55 people are almost twice as likely to have suffered age prejudice than any other form of discrimination.

“Age Concern hears regularly from older people who are refused jobs‚ training‚ insurance and even medical treatment just because of their date of birth.

“The urgent need for a powerful Commission for Equality and Human Rights‚ able to protect older people against ageism and promote equality cannot be over estimated.”
