Gordon Lishman, Director General of Age Concern, said:
“The tax simplification will benefit many people over 65 with a small income or savings. However it will make a dent in the finances of many older people under 65, quite a number of whom have contacted us concerned about the impact this will have on their income.
“These reforms have shifted the goalposts for those on fixed modest incomes who have retired pre-65 with an assumption of what their income and tax levels would be. It is unfair that these people whose incomes are not currently high enough to pay basic rate tax should lose out from tax changes and we want the government to look address this issue.
“We would urge anyone concerned to find out if they might be entitled to money benefits which could make a difference to their income. Council Tax Benefit alone could save those entitled to claim an average £624 a year.”
